Board Welcome

I'd like to welcome the new board and again thank the outgoing board for their contributions. We recapped the excellent year at our June transition board meeting, and the new board is ready to provide you with opportunities to learn, network, and advocate for health IT in these fast changing times. Goals are set with great expectations in all areas of the chapter so get ready for new ideas and continued successes with Minnesota HIMSS.

Check out the new board at www.himss-mn.org/officers/officers.html.

Volunteer Opportunity

We have a need for assistance with our website and communications. If you have some web development experience or interest we'd love to have you help out our current communications director. If interested email Sue Green for details on what the job entails at communications@himss-mn.org.

Networking - Summer Socials and Facebook

Thanks to all who joined us at this year’s summer socials! We held two events this summer; one in Rochester in June, and another in Minneapolis in July. Both events were a great success, with approximately 43 (including 15 nonmembers interested in membership) and 46 attendees respectively. Thanks to beautiful weather for both occasions, attendees were able to socialize both inside and outside while enjoying delicious appetizers and drinks. Many thanks to our sponsors for allowing us to provide these networking opportunities to our members!

We now have a HIMSS facebook site for social networking. Visit us today click here or search for MN HIMSS on Facebook and meet your friends involved in HIMSS, start a discussion, share photos, or just get to know them better.

Feedback? membership@himss-mn.org.

Programs Update

Do you think the phenomenal success of Lean Six Sigma is shared only with the makers of a tangible product?
Have you ever asked, “That’s fine, but how does this apply to my world?”
Or, have you ever been backed into a corner by somebody asking you for specific examples of how this applies to us?

If any of this resonates with you, listen and watch as Dan Munson, Villanova University’s Lean Six Sigma Program’s Master Black Belt shares with you how Lean Six Sigma can, and should apply to information technology in healthcare. This 45-minute presentation will not be boring technical case studies or inflated success stories. Instead, this entertaining presentation will be filled with images and stories of applying Lean Six Sigma to your world.

The September 9th program will feature Dan Munson speaking on how to use Lean Six Sigma methodology in healthcare IT. We currently have two location reserved; Gonda 19-101 - Crisp Lecture Hall at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN and the Superior Room at Health Partners, 8100 South 34th Ave Bloomington, MN. Additionally you may sign up to view the WebEx from your computer but then you will miss the opportunity of a good meal and networking with your colleagues and the ability to ask questions.

You can find registration information at the Upcoming Events scrolling banner on our website.

Midwest Fall Technology Conference

Our chapter is once again looking forward to participating in the Midwest Fall Technology Conference, which this year will be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on November 2nd and 3rd at the Amway Grand Hotel.

The conference’s theme is “Enabling Healthcare Reform: The Role of HIT and the 2009 Stimulus Provisions,” and will focus on directions being set at the national and state levels and what they mean for provider HIT decisions that must be made very soon. This conference will focus on what we know, what is underway, what is available, and what has worked.

Keynote speakers will include Judy Murphy, Vice President of Information Services at Aurora Health Care in Milwaukee, WI and Dr. John D. Halamka, CIO at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and CIO at Harvard Medical School.

For 25 years Judy Murphy has held national prominence as a Health Information Systems executive and as a leader in the nursing informatics community. She was the recipient of the 2006 HIMSS Nursing Informatics Leadership Award, and in 2007 was named one of the “20 People Who Make Healthcare Better” by HealthLeaders magazine. In 2009, she was appointed to serve on the newly-created Health Information Technology (HIT) Standards Committee, which is a 23-member federal advisory body to the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT, established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

In addition to serving as CIO of both Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School, John Halamka is a practicing Emergency Physician. Dr. Halamka also serves as Chairman of the New England Healthcare Exchange Network (NEHEN), overseeing clinical and administrative data exchange in Massachusetts, and as Chair of HITSP/co-Chair of the HIT Standards Committee, where he coordinates the process of electronic standards harmonization among stakeholders nationwide. Dr. Halamka can be followed on his blog, Life as a Healthcare CIO.

Call for Volunteers

The Minnesota Chapter of HIMSS is excited to announce that the 2010 Midwest Fall Technology Conference will take place in Minnesota. As the host chapter, we are currently looking for volunteers to assist with both the 2009 and 2010 events. If you are interested in participating in this great event, please contact Margaret Senn at senn.margaret@mayo.edu. This is a great opportunity to get involved in the HIMSS community!

Online Registration is now open!

Advocacy and HIMSS

2009 is the year for healthcare reform in the United States. HIMSS believes that that lives can be saved, outcomes of care improved, and costs reduced by transforming the healthcare system through the appropriate use of information technology (IT) and management systems. HIMSS advocacy, public policy, legislative and regulatory actions are guided by HIMSS. http://www.himss.org/advocacy/

In Minnesota we are able to share the HIMSS vision as well with our constituents educating them on the value of health information technology and the benefits of systems and process analysis. We are the leaders that help shape the future of healthcare in our state and nation and being part of HIMSS helps keep us informed.

We are looking for opportunities to invite our representatives to engage in meaningful conversations about these topics. Stay tuned for more in future communications.
Questions? email Katie O'Brien at advocacy@himss-mn.org.

Contest

A win-win opportunity! In Minnesota we are always up for a challenge - viewed as leaders in Healthcare. Learn how to improve yourself, your “brand,” through your educational credentials, and strengthen our local chapter.

HIMSS National issued a challenge to all chapters:
• Promote advancement in HIMSS, and
• Add the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMSS) credential to memberships

For many of you, this is the opportunity for you to receive the credentials that you have already earned; for others, it can “provide the push” for you to follow through on the education commitment that you have considered.

From personal experience I have made it a point to take advantage of the educational opportunities after studying for and passing the CPHIMS exam. In doing so, I am better informed and as a result better able to meet the demands of our industry.

The Minnesota HIMSS Board focuses on providing education on current issues that we face. We proivide the credits necessary for those needing them for certifications. We also stand ready to provide support for HIMSS Advancement.

If you accept this challenge we will help you. Please contact me via email at communications@himss-mn.org. I will work with each of you to identify where you are at and what is needed for you to achieve the next certification level.

In addition to providing support for this challenge, we also hope to hear from you regarding which topics we should focus on in the coming year.

Members may apply for advancement after meeting several criteria based on professional capability, experience, leadership, and service to their profession and the society. CPHIMS acknowledges and honors the proven expertise and commitment of those who have earned this credential. CPHIMS are distinguished innovators and dedicated contributors to the delivery of quality healthcare.

Visit http://www.himss.org/ASP/advancement.asp for more information on member advancement and CPHIMS.
