Programs Update
Ken Stensvold, FHIMSS, Programs Chair
Our November 18th program, A Follow-up to E-Prescribing, was very well received. We had close to 50 people who attended a great panel discussion led by our moderator Liz Cinqueonce from the Minnesota Department of Health. The panel consisted of four members; Mark Siska from Mayo Clinic, Dr Barry Bershow of Fairview, Alan Abramson from Health Partners and Tom Groom from Surescripts. There were numerous questions asked of the panel but most centered around timelines and details for what is expected to be required in order to receive the incentives.
Our next program is scheduled for mid January. The topic has not been decided on yet, but we are getting very close, so watch your email for details or visit our MN HIMSS web site.
2009 Midwest Fall Technology Conference
Enabling Healthcare Reform: The Role of HIT & the 2009 Stimulus Provisions
Margaret Senn, Director At Large
The 2009 Midwest Fall Technology Conference
A Great Success!
November 2 - 3, 2009
The Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, MI
The Midwest HIMSS 2009 Fall Technology Conference achieved record attendance this year, welcoming greater than 400 people to the educational and networking events! Thank you to all of the speakers, vendors, and cosponsors, who helped make this year’s conference a great success.
Using technology to our advantage, our opening keynote speaker, Dr. John Halamka, presented remotely from his office, using video conferencing for his discussion on healthcare reform and meaningful use. The session set the context for the rest of the conference. Dr. Halamka provided a recap of the actions taken to date by the Office of the National Coordinator for HIT (and other HHS agencies) since the passage of HITECH and HIT stimulus provisions in the ARRA of 2009. He described how all the HIT pieces come together to enable the clinical, accessibility, reimbursement, and efficiency goals being set for health care reform in the US. He also reviewed the new challenges for HIT vendors and users that he sees emerging from these recent changes in the governmental landscape.
The evening dinner featured a presentation by Judy Murphy, RN, FACMI, FHIMSS, Vice President, Information Services, Aurora Healthcare, Milwaukee. In her presentation, 10 Steps for Creating Your Roadmap to EHR Meaningful Use, she discussed the federal initiatives and agencies focused on increasing the widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs). She defined the key funding initiatives aimed to accelerate EHR adoption from ARRA and described the key components that comprise the definition of "meaningful use" for EHRs required for access to ARRA funds in 2011. The presentation also included a description of the progression of “meaningful use” through 2015, as well as a discussion about how to create a roadmap for organizations to achieve EHR meaningful use and receive the federal incentives.
A unique opportunity offered on the second day of the conference was the physician’s breakfast. Physicians in all ranks and specialties are needed to serve in leadership roles to help steer the many changes and innovations occurring in the field of Healthcare Information Technology (HIT). There are opportunities at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels. The panel was comprised of four physicians actively engaged in HIT leadership roles at varying venues and levels: Michael H. Zaroukian, MD, PhD, FACP, FHIMS; Harry Greenspun, MD; Gregory J. Forzley, MD; and Christine Perales, MD.
Each of the panelists briefly described their roles as champions of healthcare reform through use of Health IT as well as the opportunities and challenges they and their organizations faced from the transformation. Panelists also discussed opportunities for other physicians interested in this area. Throughout the meeting, members of the audience were encouraged to engage the panel in frank, open discussions, exploring leadership ideas with the panelists.
Dr. P. Jon White, Director of Health Information Technology, AHRQ, gave the closing keynote. Drs. Greg Forzley and Harry Greenspun joined him, adding to the discussion. The closing keynote focused on the strategic and practical impacts that meaningful adoption of Health IT and Health Information Exchange will make possible as part of healthcare delivery reform over the next five years.
Along with these excellent keynote presentations, the conference also included multiple breakout sessions, which continued the overall theme. Some of these were panel discussions with representation from most of the states that are part of the Midwest Conference planning group.

Expecting even greater attendance and participation to accompany a distinguished selection of speakers for the most prevalent topics in healthcare, we look forward to the possibility of seeing you in Minnesota for the 2010 Midwest HIMSS Fall Technology Conference!

Physician Forum
Are you a physician interested in a healthcare IT discussion with your colleagues? For the second year, the chapter has organized quarterly dinners with physicians interested in healthcare IT. This informal get-together is organized to allow for some socializing before dinner and a focused discussion of a current topic during dinner. If you are interested, please contact either our physician liaison, Dr. Andrew Mellin or Pam Graves, FHIMSS. We anticipate the next gathering will occur in the third week in January.
